Over time, heavy laptop bags and briefcases can take their toll on your back, neck and shoulders. These strategies below can help you avoid injury and keep you on the job!
Choosing a bag
Select a bag that is made of lightweight material such as vinyl or canvas
Choose a bag with wheels that can help to take the load off
Backpack style laptop bags with wide, adjustable and padded straps - these distribute weight more evenly
If you choose a bag with a single shoulder strap, ensure the strap is long, wide, adjustable and padded
Packing your bag
Check your bag each day to see if any items aren't needed and can be removed
Always pack the heaviest items at the bottom of your bag and make use of the pockets to distribute the weight
Carrying your bag
With a backpack style bag, use both shoulder straps and the waist strap. Adjust them to minimize the bag's movement
For bags with a single shoulder strap, place the strap over the head to rest on the opposite side of the bag or briefcase to help distribute weight more evenly. Switch shoulders frequently.
